The power of the neoliberal project rested in part on its ability to forge a moral and ethical common sense – in the West and beyond – based on the emancipatory and equalizing power of markets. The panel will reflect on neoliberalism’s success in this regard and envision core tenets for a new moral orientation. How has neoliberalism been able to win over different communities and constituencies across geographies? How crucial was a coherent moral language for its hegemony? Why have current progressive movements been less successful in forging an equally persuasive common sense, especially considering that the promise of emancipation and equality was long integral to the left’s appeal? How can progressives reclaim the moral upper hand? And is there a way for newly articulated moral visions to balance universal notions of fairness, dignity, and the general welfare with the values of particular cultures and religions that are not universally shared?
